Born in New York City, guitarist and composer Jonathan Kreisberg has fond memories of a childhood steeped in music. "I was lucky to grow up in a household that had a great and wide-ranging record collection, including Coltrane's My Favorite Things, John Williams playing the 'Aranjuez Concierto' and Cream's Disraeli Gears," he recalls.
Jonathan started playing guitar at the age of ten. At 16 he was admitted to the New World School of the Arts in Miami, where his jazz studies took center stage. Intensely dedicated to the instrument, he was featured in Guitar Player and DownBeat while still in his teens. He won a scholarship to the University of Miami, where he held the guitar chair in the acclaimed Concert Jazz Band, touring Brazil and performing with Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, and Red Rodney. In Miami he also performed with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.
Since returning to New York City in 1997, Jonathan has worked in the bands of many greats including Joe Locke, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joel Frahm, Greg Tardy, Roy Nathanson, Donald Edwards, Jane Monheit, Ari Hoenig, Yosvany Terry, and Lenny White. He has also led groups of various instrumentations featuring artists such as Bill Stewart, Larry Grenadier, and Scott Wendholt. He has recorded five CDs as a leader, including Unearth (2005), his first release on Mel Bay Records.
Jonathan recently recorded The South of Everywhere, scheduled for release on Mel Bay Records in September 2007. The CD features Will Vinson on alto saxophone, Gary Versace on piano, Matt Penman on bass, and Mark Ferber on drums. It is a dynamic album, combining Jonathan's exciting compositions in his quintet and his trio's unique takes on standards.
Although based in New York City, Jonathan can be seen on tour worldwide. Along with North American performances, he recently completed successful tours of Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Finland, and Japan. With return visits to these countries as well as tours of Germany and Italy planned for 2008, Jonathan is steadily becoming a figure on the international jazz scene. When not on the road, Jonathan performs with his trio each Wednesday at La Lanterna in Greenwich Village, and his quintet can often be heard at Smalls Jazz Club.
Jonathan Kreisberg is a great musician whose playing and writing always tell a story.
His formidable technique and intellect never get in the way, but only serve the agenda of
the heart.

For those who thought that there could be no more surprises in the world of jazz
guitar…may I introduce Jonathan Kreisberg. Hailed as a major up and comer by players,
fans and critics alike, and only in his early thirties, Kreisberg sounds and plays like a
seasoned veteran. You only need to listen to his latest CD release from Mel Bay
Records, Unearth, to hear his brilliance as an electrifying player and composer.
Lyle Robinson - Jazz Guitar Life
Make a note of the name Jonathan Kreisberg, one of the most distinctive and interesting
guitarists to emerge in recent years.
Charles Alexander - Jazzwise
We really want to stress how talented Jonathan Kreisberg sounds on Unearth, and how to
the European public this could be not only a revelation, but a shock. Kreisberg, steeped
in modern guitar and American jazz, is an outstanding technician, but also a remarkable
composer. We simply are in the presence of a great musician – period.
Philippe Baron - RTBF / Belgian Jazz Radio
A fascinating ax-man…Kreisberg also turns out to be a composer worthy of stacking his
tunes next to those of Gershwin, Shorter, and Lennon / McCartney.
Russell Carlson - JazzTimes
After listening to these discs, it’s obvious that Kreisberg is well on his way to becoming a
jazz standard himself.
Terrell Kent Holmes - All About Jazz
Kreisberg illustrates his deft compositional touch on Unearth, yet his playing is perhaps
even stronger – he’s prone to compact runs with a strong sense of fluidity and has a
flawless sense of harmony.
