John Pisano
Even if the name John Pisano doesn’t immediately ring a bell, most people have heard the work of this world-class guitarist.
Although he has spent more time as a leader in recent years, Pisano originally established his reputation as a first-call sideman in the top studios of Los Angeles. Breaking into the jazz scene in the 1950s on recordings with Billy Bean and Chico Hamilton, he went on to perform and record with legends such as Buddy DeFranco, Benny Goodman, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach, Frank Sinatra, Michael Franks, Clare Fischer, Julie London, Bobby Troup, and Barbra Streisand. A founding member of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Pisano also developed a solid foundation in Brazilian music through his work with Sergio Mendes.
Pisano’s experience as a leader includes a series of releases on Pablo Records, beginning with Among Friends, on which he performed stunning duets with Lee Ritenour, Phil Upchurch, Ron Affif, Dori Caymmi and Ted Greene.
Among Friends also featured Joe Pass. In one of the defining partnerships of his career, Pisano worked extensively with Pass over three decades. They released more than a dozen albums before Pass died in 1994.
While successful as a leader, Pisano has continued to cultivate his reputation as an A-list sideman on recordings such as Natalie Cole's Ask A Women Who Knows and Diana Krall's platinum CD The Look Of Love and Grammy Award-winning Live In Paris.
In 1997, while playing a series of dates at Papashon in Los Angeles, Pisano convinced the club to begin featuring a different guitarist each week. Guitar Night is now entering its tenth year, and while the setting has since moved to Spazio, Pisano still presides over the popular weekly event.
Pisano currently serves as spokesman and chief endorser for Eastman Guitars, and he has developed a signature instrument for the company.
Pisano and his wife, vocalist Jeanne Pisano, tour and perform as The Flying Pisanos.
